“This is Paradise!” - Saltergate Schools Celebrate Launch of Enriching New Forest School

We are thrilled to announce the launch of their exciting new Forest School, an enriching outdoor learning initiative that brings the curriculum to life through hands-on exploration in the natural world.

Forest School is a child-centred, long-term learning approach that promotes holistic development through regular sessions in a natural setting. As defined by the Forest School Association, it encourages supported risk-taking, independence, and confidence through learner-led, play-based activities.

In partnership with Born of the Forest, weekly Forest School sessions are now being delivered to Key Stage One pupils at Saltergate Schools, with the programme set to expand to include the entire school next year.

Pupils are already embracing the experience with enthusiasm with one child summing it up by exclaiming, “This is paradise!”

The sessions offer a rich variety of experiences, including:

  • Campfire cooking (such as dandelion and banana pancakes)
  • Tyre swings, slacklines, and hammocks
  • Safe tool use (saws, hammers, peelers)
  • Den building and mud kitchen play
  • Creating insect habitats and exploring animals and their environments as part of the science curriculum

Headteacher at Saltergate Schools, Mrs Jo Hall, says, “We are incredibly proud to launch our Forest School programme. It offers children a joyful, active and meaningful way to develop vital life skills and values such as resilience, independence and creativity, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.”

Saltergate Schools recently joined Red Kite Learning Trust, a multi academy trust of 16 schools across North and West Yorkshire, including Coppice Valley and Rossett Acre Primary Schools, both of which have also introduced Forest Schools.

Amanda Thornton Jones, Director of Primary Education at Red Kite Learning Trust, comments, “Forest School perfectly reflects our commitment to championing learning that inspires and enriches children’s lives. It’s wonderful to see Saltergate offering children a dynamic and engaging experience that supports both academic success and emotional well-being.”
