Our key aim at Saltergate is for our pupils to engage with and enjoy a wide range of physical education and sports.
A wide variety of skills and sports are taught before, during and after school (including extra-curricular). This includes class teacher delivery as well as specialist teaching support from St. Aidan's and HTAFC. Progression of skills is achieved through the delivery of the REAL PE platform.
The introduction of archery and kurling are examples of our commitment to broaden and develop pupils' skills and experience within the curriculum, both in our teaching and as extra-curricular clubs.
All pupils are expected to be equipped and ready for any PE lesson, with:
For sport-specific items such as shin-pads or gum-shields, pupils will be given advanced warning and these are often required for competitions only.
Failure to wear the required kit may result in pupils not accessing a lesson to its full potential or behavioural consequences.
We actively encourage a healthy, competitive mindset at Saltergate. Research has shown the positive effects of PE and how an active environment can enhance learning in all subjects. This is a further opportunity to instill our 5 school values of 'Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Reflection and Resourcefulness' and further promote success, intrinsically.
We have a number of pupils competing at high levels, both in and out of school. Opportunities are provided at grass roots level to promote participation with local clubs and engage pupils.
The Harrogate School Sports Partnership is a partnership of primary and secondary schools across Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and Nidderdale. Their VISION is to create a sustainable PE, School Sport and Physical Activity system as part of the core provision for all children and young people. The MISSION is to positively impact on the lives of every young person attending Partnership schools through the opportunities that they provide. They promote the School Games VALUES of Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self Belief and Teamwork, all of which we refer to and use at Saltergate.
