A key aim of History teaching at Saltergate Schools is to stimulate the children’s interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. Through five strands of skills we want children to leave with an in depth understanding of the past. We teach children a sense of chronology with a range and depth of historical knowledge, to question different interpretations of history, to develop their enquiry skills and be able to organise and communicate their historical thoughts accurately. We want our children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives today and actively promote links to the local community and our own past. When investigating these past events we want them to develop ‘second order’ concepts that go further than learning dates and recalling knowledge we want them to develop the skills of being a historian. The skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation, consequence, significance, similarity, difference.
