Meet our Governors!

Mr Mark Walker (Chair)

Mr Mark Walker (Chair) 1

My name is Mark Walker. I have chaired the Governing Body for the last nine years, initially at the infant school and now as chair of the Saltergate federation. I enjoy the challenges that the role presents. To fulfil the strategic vision is our core purpose.

The school has been through a number of significant changes in recent years, such as the planning and building of the 1.8 million on-site children’s Centre, securing our own trailblazing pre nursery provision for two year olds, the development of the ‘exceptional’ outdoors and creative curriculum and more recently the federation of the two schools.

The stable Governing Body continues to support and challenge the school to move forward in its educational standards, improve outcomes and meet the aspirational targets for each and every child.

Mrs Laura Martin (Chair of Teaching and Learning Committee)

Mrs Laura Martin (Chair of Teaching and Learning Committee) 1
My name is Laura Martin.  I am married with two sons attending Saltergate Junior Schools.  I am a co-opted Governor, and have been chair of the Curriculum committee for three years. I work part-time at the infant school and have a good knowledge of the children and of the school systems. I strive for excellence for all and continue to challenge the schools to improve standards, accelerate progress and meet aspirational targets.

Mr Jonathan Bond (Chair of Resources Committee)

Mr Jonathan Bond (Chair of Resources Committee) 1

My name is Jonathan Bond. I am married with four teenage daughters. I am Pastor of Jennyfield Evangelical Church (12 years).  My role within the Governors is as a Community Governor, also serving on the Resource Committee as chair.  I enjoy coming into school to lead “Together Times” and have previously enjoyed going on school trips. I often sit on the interview panel when recruiting new staff.

Mr Dave Williams (Chair of Safeguarding Committee)

Mr Dave Williams (Chair of Safeguarding Committee) 1
My name is Dave Williams. I was previously a governor for eight years, and back then took on the responsibility of Deputy Chair, Chair of Finance and also played a major part in setting up the Marketing and Publicity Committee, in the days when school numbers were much lower. It is such a pleasure to be back again as a  Community Governor. My own children had a wonderful time at Saltergate and both have gone on to be very successful both at university and beyond. I have work for Building and Cleaning Services as the school site manager first here at Saltergate and later at King James' School, following my early retirement as a manager of the Harrogate Courts. I am delighted to again, make a difference to the lives of so many youngsters. I feel as though I have been given the opportunity to ‘come home’ and strive to provide an excellent education for those in our community.

Mrs Anne-Marie Phelps (SEN Link Governor)

Mrs Anne-Marie Phelps (SEN Link Governor) 1

My name is Anne-Marie Phelps.

I have two sons currently attending  Saltergate Infant and Junior Schools. I work in education at secondary level, as a Phase Leader, which gives me an insight and understanding of the challenges in Education.

I enjoy being part of the Teaching and Learning committee and challenging standards. It is very clear in these schools that finances are used effectively to the benefit of all children and  that a clear emphasis is based upon employing skilled staff.

The infant school is currently well oversubscribed and that is in part due to the wonderful team and provision here at Saltergate. I am proud to be supporting the school to move forward with it’s new initiatives and trailblazing plans, and to support the school in accelerating progress further up the school.

Mrs Linda Mortimer (Headteacher)

Mrs Linda Mortimer (Headteacher) 1

My name is Linda Mortimer. I am the proud headteacher of Saltergate Infant School, Nursery, Gateways and more recently Saltergate Junior school. I enjoy working with the Governors of the school to ensure that our vision is seen in practice. Over recent years we have worked together to achieve some notable achievements for our children; some of which include trailblazing with a two year old pre- nursery provision, creating an Atelier, transforming the school meals experience, developing the  ‘exceptional’ outdoors and an excellent flexible curriculum. At the Junior school, we are working, with determination, to accelerate progress and secure improved outcomes.

Courageous leadership is our ethos.

Mrs Louise Scott (Deputy Headteacher - Infants)

Mrs Louise Scott (Deputy Headteacher - Infants) 1

My name is Louise Scott. I have three boys who have all passed through the Saltergate Schools and are enjoying success in life post university, at university and at secondary school.

I am the Deputy Headteacher as well as the Early Years Leader, and enjoy these exciting and fulfilling roles. I have worked across the school in all age groups and understand the needs and challenges in each phase of children’s education.

I work with a skilled team and together we develop provision to motivate and accelerate children’s learning across both schools..

Councillor Don Mackenzie

Councillor Don Mackenzie 1

My name is Councillor Don Mackenzie

I am the North Yorkshire County Councillor for Saltergate and represent residents of the Jenny Fields and Duchy estates at County Hall in Northallerton. I am very pleased to be a member of this school’s Governing Body and to play my part in its continued success and development.

Mrs Rebecca Hepworth

Mrs Rebecca Hepworth 1

My name is Becky Hepworth

I have two young children; one who attends Saltergate Junior School and another who is currently in the infant school. I have been a parent governor since April 2013 and sit on the Teaching and Learning committee.

I work full time and therefore understand and share the struggles that parents face.  I hope that in my role as Governor, I am helping the school to continue to be a place we can be proud of.  I think it’s important to make the hectic life of parents a little easier and free of worry.  Your child’s education and welfare at Saltergate School is very important to us.

Mrs Edwina Mort

Mrs Edwina Mort 1
My name is Edwina Mort. I am married with two children, one currently attending Saltergate Junior school. I have been a Governor since October 2011 and I sit on the Safeguarding committee. I now work for both schools, based in the Junior school office, and help run the Friends of Saltergate Committee for any events. I have been instrumental in supporting the development of the lunchtime provision and have organised previously shared lunches with parents. I record and produce the school DVDs. I have also been involved with the development of this website and many other ICT systems throughout school.

Mrs Dot Hemingway (Health and Safety Link Governor)

Mrs Dot Hemingway (Health and Safety Link Governor) 1

My name is Dot Hemingway. I am married with four children who all started their education at Saltergate.  My role within the Governors is as a Co-opted Governor serving on the Safeguarding committee, and I am Health and Safety Link Governor.  I played a significant role in the development of the children’s centre building project, and more recently I led the a team with the negotiations for retaining our incredible cleaning team.

Mrs Samantha McLeod

Mrs Samantha McLeod 1

My name is Samantha McLeod. I am a staff governor. This is my third term of office and I really enjoy working with the governors at a strategic level. I work in Key Stage 1 on a daily basis as a HLTA, covering classes and leading 1:1 interventions which make such an incredible difference to the children.

I particularly enjoyed leading the Children’s Centre building project alongside the headteacher in 2009. The project has made a difference to the lives of families in both the children’s Centre and our school!

I am a lead lunchtime playleader and organise the lively lunchtime sessions. All of the active play and dancing certainly keeps us all fit and healthy!

Judith Hollywood

Judith Hollywood 1
My name is Judith Hollywood and I have worked at Saltergate for 14 years. Having two children, (one currently in Year 8 and one in Year 5) they have both had the happy experience of attending Saltergate schools.
I am the Deputy and SENCO for key stage 2 and teach in Year 6 for two days a week. High expectations are essential to achieving and improving standards for all children. Working as a team, we promote the 5R’s, celebrate success and always strive to adapt, change and improve where necessary.

Val Shaw

Val Shaw 1

I have been a Governor almost as long as I have been working at Saltergate. I am an Associate Governor which means I can't vote in meetings but I can offer advice and opinions.

I became interested in the work of the Governing Body as my father was a Governor for almost thirty years and I heard many fascinating facts about the school in Leeds he represented. I was delighted to be asked to be on the governing body.

My main interest is in Safeguarding which is keeping everyone in the school safe and happy!

Nicole Turner

Nicole Turner 1
